John 1:1-5 | The Pre-existent Creator

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

1. Jesus is eternal

John 1:1a (ESV)
In the beginning was the Word…

be·gin·ning
‘the point in time or space at which something starts.’ –Merriam-Webster

  • The point at which time and space started Jesus was.
  • Micah prophesied about the pre-existent, eternal Jesus.

Micah 5:2 (KJV)
2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

  • He is from everlasting; He has no beginning.
  • Zechariah records the Messiah’s own promise to come…

Zechariah 2:10-11 (ESV)
10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord.11 And many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you.

Why is this important?

  • If Jesus is from everlasting, then He’s more than a prophet; more than a good man; more than just our Lord and more than our “older brother”.
  • He is the uncaused cause; the Alpha and Omega; The beginning and the end; The Almighty; the great I Am; He is God!
  • Apart from him we would not exist. Nothing would exist.

2. Jesus is creator

All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:15-17 (ESV)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Why is this important?

  • If Jesus is the creator, he has the power of life.

3. Jesus is Life and Light

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  • Jesus is the Author of Life.

Acts 3:14-15b (ESV)
14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life…

  • Jesus’ existence is not dependant on another.

John 5:26 (ESV)
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

  • Jesus has the power to remake life.

John 11:25 (ESV)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

  • Jesus is Light
  • We live in a dark world

John 12:46 (ESV)
I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

1 John 1:5 (ESV)
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Why is this important?

  • Our biggest problem is death. We need a way to overcome death.
  • Our second biggest problem is direction. We need real direction in life.

Conclusion:

  • Jesus offers everlasting life. It’s a free gift that we cannot earn. If He can create life with out our help, He can give us eternal life without our help.
  • Jesus offers direction in a dark world.
